Memorial Circle
The Memorial Circle is dedicated to honouring all the children who attended Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. The goal of Residential Schools was to assimilate the children by removing them from traditions, culture and family. The Memorial is one of the many features in the park designed to bring all individuals together, especially residential school Survivors.
The circle was chosen as it symbolizes the cycle of life/nature and is represented in various traditions and ceremonies the residential school children were unable to practice while attending school at the Mohawk Institute. The inner part of the circle can be used as a podium, individuals facing inward, the focus remains on the storyteller or subject, creating an environment that includes all in attendance.
