Our Climber / Playground project’s goal was to purchase and install commercial climbers for individuals and families visiting our Memorial Park.
Each park feature was chosen specifically in the hope that it may mend the harm that was done to the former students while attending the residential school. While the Mohawk Institute Residential School was in operation, students and living quarters were separated based on age and gender. There are many accounts from former students being separated from their siblings, often with little to no contact for extended periods… sometimes lasting for years.
Former students who carry negative memories of this experience have the opportunity to create new, positive moments on the same grounds. The Climbers provides a structure for children to play on and the benches (forthcoming) are for the family members / residential school survivors who wish to sit and rest as the children play. We hope these new positive moments and experiences of gathering and connecting with family may foster a greater sense of healing and peace.
