Media Release –
Mohawk Village Memorial Park acknowledges the importance of receiving this grant which was made possible by the National Sixties Scoop Healing Foundation of Canada.
To date, The National Sixties Scoop Healing Foundation of Canada is the first organization to have recognized the importance of what happened to children during the Sixties Scoop, in which Native children were placed in non-indigenous homes from the residential school system.
Two of the Sixties Scoop former students are part of the Mohawk Village Memorial Park Board and therefore it is fitting that the “healing pathway” be part of the memorial park. The memorial park is being constructed on the girl’s side of the former residential school – Mohawk Institute, in Brantford, Ontario, honouring all of the children who attended the school from 1835 to 1970. Many from this facility were placed in foster care away from their home communities.
A traditional ceremony will officially open the healing pathway and then be part of the history and education of the Sixties Scoop, moving forward. When complete, the pathway will also have a memorial plaque acknowledging The Sixties Scoop Healing Foundation of Canada and their role in the pathway.
